Kent Burns has a number of different notches on his belt that qualify him to speak on the subject of career advancement in the Big4. He’s an author of two books, been featured in a variety of noteworthy publications from Forbes to The Boston Globe, has worked for PwC and KPMG in their tax disciplines and is of course a CPA.

“The first thing I would say it’s important for people to understand is how the landscape has changed,” says the President of Simply Driven Executive Search, a member of the Sanford Rose Associates® network of offices, adding the path to becoming a partner back in the 1980s when he broke into public accounting necessitated the need to become a technician.

As the business evolved into the late 1990s, the focus shifted to salesman.

“There was a tremendous focus put on business development,” Burns says. “The firms restructured the way that partners were compensated. The technical guys got shoved over to the side because it was the folks that could sell that became the rising stars in the firm.”
