Interviewing for a job can be stressful. Add food and a few drinks, and the possibility for an awkward mistake increases tenfold.
While most of us had a crash course in basic table manners as children, the world appears to be a far cry from the days of Emily Post and etiquette schools. A 2016 study by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs noted that nearly three-quarters (74%) of all respondents believed that manners were on the decline.
“Usually a candidate is in the home stretch when it comes to having a meal, but I always say, ‘Don’t take your foot off the gas,’ because it is not a done deal. The interviewer may be monitoring the person’s every move, so keep it professional, don’t talk about anything too controversial.” – Paul Feeney, managing director, Sanford Rose Associates.
