Is it a promotion? Or a curse? You’ve just been named an interim manager. Being asked to take on a job temporarily while your employer looks for a candidate to fill the position permanently poses new career possibilities and perils. Successful interim managers use this time to show everyone what they can do—and potentially win the job permanently. They often, however, lack the authority and support to make changes. And being cast as a stand-in for a role you really want can be hard on the ego.

Interim managers “have to check their ego at the door” and not worry about “the labels people are going to put on them,” says Tim Tolan, chief executive of the Tolan Group, a St. Augustine, Fla., affiliate of the Sanford Rose Associates executive-search network. Co-workers’ level of respect “has a lot to do with the way you see yourself in that job.”
