If you are on the job hunt, it’s possible the jobs you are applying to aren’t even real. A ‘MyPerfectResume’ study finds more than 80% of recruiters admit to posting listings for jobs that don’t exist, called “ghost jobs.”

Jacob Binke is a managing partner with Sanford Rose Associates, a recruiting network with locations in Connecticut.

“There’s so many reasons why, you know, one is to collect resumes in mass,” said Jacob Binke.

Binke estimates 25% of job postings are ghost jobs. MyPerfectResume polled 753 recruiters across the country and 81% admitted to posting fake job listings.

The survey found the top two reasons recruiters say they post ghost jobs are to test the market’s response to hard-to-fill jobs and to maintain a company’s presence on job boards even when they aren’t hiring.

Binke says companies will also post higher level positions to attract candidates for a lower title

“Companies might put senior project manager as you know what they’re looking for when really they’re only looking for a project manager, but they thought that more project managers would be attracted to the senior project manager position,” said Binke.
