McIlvaine<\/p>\n As effective as the employee-referral process can be, some key improvements are still needed at many companies.<\/p>\n Too often, experts say, employee-referral programs not only fail to meet HR’s expectations, but end up leaving a bad taste in the mouths of job candidates and the people who referred them. A lack of transparency, inadequate rewards and poor communication are often the culprits, they say.<\/p>\n “I do a lot of speaking on HR and recruiting topics, and there’s always a lot of discussion on how to increase the number of employee referrals,” says Scott Samuels<\/a>, president of Overland Park, Kan.-based Horizon Hospitality<\/a>. “Everyone does something a little bit different and, 95 percent of the time, it’s wrong.”<\/p>\n
