So you\u2019re a front-line employee looking to move into a supervisory role.\u00a0 Surprising new research suggests that certain traits you emphasize in an\u00a0 interview that might land you the promotion could ultimately make you an\u00a0 ineffective manager \u2013 qualities like creativity, a propensity to plan ahead, and\u00a0 the ability to multitask.<\/p>\n

Creative people \u201csometimes have a tendency to be wrapped up in their own\u00a0 minds,\u201d says Tom Thomson<\/a>, a talent acquisition consultant not involved in the\u00a0 study. \u201cThey can be dreamers who don\u2019t team well with others.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Based on his observations and experience in staffing, Thomson says that many\u00a0 seemingly \u201cgood\u201d qualities can become liabilities when taken too far, including\u00a0 self-confidence bordering on egotism.<\/em><\/p>\n

Decisiveness \u201ccan be good or it can be negative, if the person is making\u00a0 decisions before getting feedback or input from direct reports,\u201d says Thomson,\u00a0 managing director of the Franklin, Tenn., office of Sanford Rose Associates, a\u00a0 network of independently owned executive search firms.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

Citing research from his partner organization, The Gabriel Institute, Thomson\u00a0 says managerial traits that are consistently positive from one person to the\u00a0 next include \u201ccoherence\u201d \u2013 defined as being \u201cneither rigid nor diffuse\u201d \u2013 as\u00a0 well as empathy and self-awareness.<\/em><\/p>\n
